The competition is open to both women and men in all three disciplines of saber, foil and epee, and will include individual and team events.
Preliminary rounds will continue into Tuesday until the number of participants is whittled down to 64 per individual event and to 32 for the team contests
Finals in individual events will be on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, with team finals on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
A total of 218 entries were received for individual men's epee and 140 entries for the women, while there were 130 entries for men's saber and 109 for women's saber, and in the foil contest there were 152 individual male entries and 83 female ones.
Five of the reigning six Olympic champions are expected to show up in the worlds, namingly the men's epee winner Ruben Limardo of Venezuela, Lei Sheng of China in the men's foil, Aron Szilagyi of Hungary for saber.
For the women's part, foil champion Elisa Di Francisca of Italy and saber champion Kim Ji-Yeon of South Korea have registered.
The only missing Olympic gold medalist is Ukraine's Yana Shemyakina, who claimed the women's title in London last year.
All the six men's and women's world No. 1s have confirmed to compete here. They are Diego Occhuzzi of Italy (saber), Andrea Baldini of Italy (foil) and Ruben Limardo of Venezuela (epee) for the men's events, and Olga Kharlan of Ukraine (saber), Arianna Errigo of Italy (foil), and Ana Maria Branza of Romania (epee) who top the women's world rankings.
SYDNEY, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- The G20 cultural festival in Australian city of Brisbane kicked off on Friday featuring a spectacular laser light and projection show.
Color me Brisbane, which is one the events of the festival, will see 32 city buildings covered with colored lights or images.
Every night, the city's public square will feature a moving projection called The Changing Face of Brisbane, featuring images of the capital's lifestyle and accompanied by a specially recorded soundtrack by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and Opera Queensland.
Queensland Arts Minister Ian Walker said the cultural celebrations will shine an international spotlight on the diverse and dynamic communities and artists that make up Brisbane, as the city plans to welcome the world for the G20 Summit.
"The G20 will bring 4,000 delegates and 3,000 media to Brisbane, which will be a once in a generation opportunity to promote Queensland," Walker said in a statement.
"The economic benefits will flow across the state through increased business opportunities, on top of the initial boost to tourism, so it's worth celebrating."
Creative director of the G20 Cultural Celebrations, Athol Young, said Friday's opening night celebrations were a sneak preview of the impressive performances, events, and displays that will happen over the next three weeks.
There will be hundreds of free community events including music, dance, street performances, barbeques and parties until the world leaders head home on November 16.
